About John Cory

John Cory is running for Justice of the Peace in Henderson Justice Court, Department 4. He was born and raised in Southern Nevada, graduated high school from Henderson, and attended UNLV for both undergraduate and law degrees. Married for 18 years, he and his wife, Sierra, have four children and call Henderson home.

In his career as a prosecutor, John has worked tirelessly to keep the community safe, seeking justice for victims while ensuring the constitutional rights of all involved are protected. He has earned a reputation for being thoughtful, fair, and respectful to all who interact with our criminal justice system. He will bring that same thoughtful, fair, and respectful demeanor to the bench as a Justice of the Peace.

John has the experience to handle all matters that come before justice court: criminal, civil, temporary protective orders, small claims, and evictions. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, he worked as a civil attorney, handling complex litigation as well as landlord/tenant matters, preparing him to handle small claims and eviction cases. His work in justice court, municipal court, district court, and federal bankruptcy court has prepared him to serve the community as an effective and fair Justice of the Peace.

Over the years, John has found great joy in the work he has done with numerous specialty court programs, helping individuals to overcome substance abuse and addiction, work through trauma, obtain stable housing, pursue education and employment, and get a fresh start on life. Currently, he works with the City of Henderson’s ABC (Assistance in Breaking the Cycle) Drug Treatment Court program.

John has a long history of volunteering to serve this community in a variety of ways, including coaching youth sports, teaching in numerous capacities, performing music at charity events, organizing and participating in donation drives and trash cleanup projects, and visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and retirement communities. John also has taken a leadership role in various volunteer programs, such as presiding over the inauguration at UNLV of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, which provides free income tax preparation assistance for low-income individuals.

John’s family roots in this community run deep. His great-grandmother ran a cafe for workers constructing Hoover Dam, his great-grandfather worked for the railroad in Southern Nevada, his grandfather served for a time as the Las Vegas City Attorney, and his father was a district court judge for 17 years. John comes from a long line of those who have served the community, and he looks forward to continuing his family’s legacy. John will serve the City of Henderson with integrity, experience, and fairness as a Justice of the Peace.
